Oh, the universe works in strange ways. I don't write much on this blog about my journey as an entrepreneur (I started a blog about that a long time ago, called Zest, very out of date, but still relevant concepts if you're interested in the topic), but if I did, my posts would be voluminous. Maybe you can tell from my writing which weeks are highs and which weeks are lows on this roller coaster ride -- I think in low weeks, I don't enjoy my food quite as much, and I don't try quite as hard on the blog (my apologies!). But this is a high week and what felt like weeks of being trapped in a forest layered in thick fog has turned into a bright and open clearing. Nothing ground-breaking has happened for mor.sl this week (potentially, but not sure yet), but some pieces of good news and lots of action have me feeling that I've found my way once again. And it feels great. I know it won't last forever and I'm sure I'll be in a foggy forest again at some point, so I'm savoring every minute. And every flavor.
Can I attribute this path bending turn to green juice? Probably not. But there's something about drinking a glass of kale in the a.m. that really makes you feel like you can do anything. I call it the "Hulk Effect." Invariably, when I do something good for my body, I feel like the Incredible Hulk; (I think I'm slightly better looking though?) Green juice really makes me feel unstoppable. I'm sure it's totally psychological, but the mind is pretty powerful and I'll take energy and strength wherever I can get it.
My sister turned me on to green juice when she came over one afternoon and demanded that I make her some (older sisters are so bossy!). I happened to have all the ingredients she required, and I blended them up. I was surprised by the taste - it was actually refreshing. Admittedly, it's not the sweet, frothy, heavenliness of my fruit smoothie, but it is has its own redeeming qualities - it's citrusy, earthy, and...green. I wouldn't say I've perfected this one yet (I have to chug it down because it tends to separate if left standing for too long), but I'll test and iterate like I do elsewhere, and report back.
Two questions for you, though, if you'll entertain them:
1. What is your green juice? When Popeye eats a can of spinach, he can whoop Brutus' butt. When I drink green juice, I can't whoop anything, but I feel like I could, and that's half the battle. What food or drink gives you energy?
2. Do you want to hear more about start-up land? Or do you prefer this to be a strictly foodie blog? Just curious :)
Green Juice (Serves 1)
- 1-2 cups kale, roughly chopped
- 1-2 handfuls of frozen mango
- 1 handful of cilantro, washed
- 1 handful parsley, washed
- 1/2 lime's juice
- 1/2 cup of water
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. If it's too thick, add more water and blend again. *Please note these measurements are rough guesstimates of what I actually put in. Basically, if you're not getting a refreshing flavor profile from this, add more cilantro and lime. That's what gives this its zing.
